The church of Ephesus in Asia was started by the Apostle Paul, along with believers Priscilla & Aquilla. Timothy eventually became a Bishop there (and believed to be martyrd there). So, the church of Ephesus started out very very strong in every way. I believe they were so strong that they were the first church Jesus spoke to and John recorded in Chapter 2 of Revelation. At this time the church is around 50-60 years old.

The church also had wealth, power and influence. This attracted a false teacher by the name of Nicolas. He founded a Christian sect known as  Nicolaitans.

Many false teachings abounded in his church and these false teachings were denounced by the leaders of the church at Ephesus.  Read More

Jesus praised the church of Ephesus for their hatred of the works and deeds of the Nicolaitans. Jesus said He hated those works as well.

Rev. 2:6

He commended the church at Ephesus for:

Their Good Deeds

Their Hard Work

Testing False Apostles

But…even after all the praise,  Jesus called the church of Ephesus to repentance…

Why?

Because they had forsaken their first love.

What does this mean?

They had lost their joy in the good deeds, hard work, and the teaching of God’s Word. 

They needed to pursue and restore their relationship of intimacy with Christ.

Jesus promised them if… they repented, and returned to a “first love relationship” with Him, then He would give them access to the tree of life which is in the paradise of God. Revelation 2:7.

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God." ~Jesus 

There have been many times as a believer, I have been caught up in serving, working hard, even called out false teachers and practices, but depreciation was in my heart.

When I realized I couldn’t help myself I repented and asked Jesus to lead me back to Him and refill me with His love, joy and peace.
