Lessons in Life from the World’s Wealthiest Single Mom!

“The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.” Proverbs 10:22

God has a purpose when it comes to the resources He provides in my life. Wealth is viewed very differently in every culture.  I’ve had the blessing to visit other countries and places in the United States and to really realize how blessed I am and surrounded by such wealth.   This post is about God’s provision for  me. For many years, I felt being a single mom was one of the most difficult professions on the planet. But, today I am so thankful for all that God has provided for me and my family.

Life’s Lesson # 1 – Provision

“But My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

In 1991 after a financial crisis, my husband and I separated and my two youngest boys and I went to Tallahassee, Florida to live with my older brother, his wife and my nieces Dena and Adrienne. After a few weeks, the Lord provided me with a good job and a one bedroom apartment. My sister-in-law helped me figure out a weekly budget and so I would cash my check and put money aside each week in an envelope, one for each of my bills.  10% of my gross income went directly into the offering plate and $35 per week was our food budget.  It seemed I always had more envelopes than money at the end of the end of the week but I knew God would provide.

Then our first month’s electric bill arrived and I went to get my envelope for the electric.

To my dismay, I had only put away $6. I thought to myself, “How did that happen?”

Holding my breath, I opened the bill and a big cry of relief came when I saw the charge of only $6. But, I did call the electric company immediately. They said the bill was correct and it was probably because it was just the first month’s bill.

I promised myself to put away more the next month. When the next month came, and I opened the electric  bill it was only $12 this time. As you can imagine, I didn’t waste any time calling the electric company.

Their response was,

“Mrs. Hoenig, yes there is a problem. We never got your payment from last month!  This is why it’s $12.”

I said, no, you don’t understand, “This has been the coldest winter in Tallahassee and I run my heat all the time.” The operator said, “I will check the meter and get back with you.”

Well, the fact is I never got a bill that went over $6 a month for the first nine months (the entire time we were in this little apartment).  Our God supplied for our needs abundantly and above anything I could dream or imagine at the time.

God also supplied us with friends and family who provided food, fellowship and lots of fun! We opened up our home each week for dinner on Saturday nights where the boys and I provided the main course. Usually I got the BOGO which always provided a great meal and our friends brought side dishes, desserts and drinks. We always had plenty of leftovers for the rest of the week. Another way we saved money and had fun was going to a local restaurant which had a “Kids Eat Free” night on Wednesday nights. It was a hot food buffet and salad bar. My boys loaded their bellies with plenty of good food and we also had fellowship with many of the families we knew would eat there also.

Choices… we all have to make them

choices

CHOICES – People may often misunderstand your goals, your vision, your mission ~ but keep going, keep striving and continue to push, having faith in the specific calling you have been given! (While at the same time being open for Godly accountability and constructive criticism) FB Post by Maverick Hoenig June 3, 2017.

CHOICES

When I read this today the Holy Spirit quickened my spirit. In the area of crisis and trauma care, I see every day where hurting individuals are faced with choices that they weren’t expecting to make or having to live with choices that were made for them.

Brenton

I recently talked to one of my spiritual sons who was in an accident where a semi-truck made too close a turn and drug him and his motorcycle down the road. It not only caused him to literally being run over and left critically injured and badly broken. He now has to walk with a cane and has severe health issues. He said to me,

“Mom” I can either choose to give up, gripe and B**** about my life. I’ve got to get up and live life to the fullest.”

Throughout his life, I’ve watched this young man battle through many obstacles, some self inflicted and we have had many conversations about his walk with God. He’s still sorting through his life’s purpose and I have no doubt that God is already using him in ways even he can’t see or understand. But, even through his difficult times he has been there for me when I felt like giving up.  He has walked with me through crisis, trauma and hopelessness.

Today happened to be one of those days where I was questioning why things happen and if I should have made different choices.

Our conversation helped steer me and get my mind back to where it should be… on choosing to living and loving myself & others “God’s Way” – not my own.

I’ve got so much to be thankful for. Looking back I see the hard choices I had to make at times, especially when I wondered at the time if they were the right ones.  God has always redeemed even my poor choices into life giving miracles….

Summer is here… in Alaska

Summer is here…
The past few weeks have been very exciting as the snow in the Matanatsu Valley has melted and you see campers, four wheelers and the landscape change from white to green!
Or not quite yet…
This week a fresh blanket of snow has draped the mountains like a polar bear coat. It hasn’t stopped the hikers, bikers and campers flooding into the state.
Crisis & Trauma Care
I’ve been blessed the past few months to meet with many groups and individuals who share my passion for crisis and trauma care. There are so many warriors God is using to shine His marvelous light through to overcome the darkness that cause Alaskans so much trauma.
Heroin Overdoses
During the month of May, there has been a dramatic increase in heroin overdoses in Anchorage. Emergency personnel are arriving on the deadly scenes but have also saved many lives using a drug called Narcan. Please pray for hope, restoration and recovery for those who have overdosed and those who have lost family members and friends to overdoses.

Ice Road Trucker Missionary

  • As I pulled down the storage shed door, “I wondered if I would ever see any of  my belongings which held so many precious memories – again?”
  • This is what it must have felt like for the early missionaries who packed their belongings in their coffins and said Goodbye to family members, heirlooms, friends, etc.
  • Not only did I say goodbye to stuff that day, very soon I would say goodbye to my sons, their wives and my grandchildren.  I was off to Alaska – The Last Frontier!I remember the moment years ago when I sang so emphatically:
  • “Lord, here I am send me to the nations.”  Little did I know that would be to many nations– all in one state!

    alaska-florida

  • Alaska Facts You could fit Florida in to Alaska 10 times! One-fifth the size of the Lower 48, Alaska is bigger than Texas, California, and Montana combined.
  • Alaska is also far-flung: 5.3 times wider (east to west) and 3.2 times taller (north to south) than Florida. From north to south, Alaska measures 1420 miles, the distance from Denver to Mexico City, and east to west 2500 miles, the distance from Savannah, GA to Santa Barbara, CA. Florida has 262 times more people per square mile.
  • If Florida’s population density were the same as Alaska’s, only 64,996 people would live in Florida rather than 17,019,068 (based on 2003 data). Alaska has 8 times as much inland water (in lakes, reservoirs, and rivers) as Florida. In fact, Alaska has 3 million lakes over twenty acres big. Alaska has more than 50% of the entire U.S. coastline, or 6,640 miles. Florida has 1,350 miles of coastline!

Beach Picture - Copy

On numerous occasions when I shut storage doors; I knew that someday I would return, unpack and set up a home where food, fun, Bible studies and laughter would eventually be shared again with family and friends.  The past few years in Pensacola have been joyfully shared with family and dear friends, however I was never able to unpack and set up camp.

It has been a little like the Israelites in the wilderness. The Israelites had to move on when the cloud by day or the fire by night prompted them to follow. So in planning for this change, I felt a shift as I shut the door – it was different. All of the makings of a home; furniture, dishes, sheets, blankets, curtains, decorative pillows and cooking utensils were now gone and I feel a new season ahead!  As my friend Debby calls it, “You are a tramp (I prefer the word “traveler”) for the Lord!”

I am also saying goodbye to family, friends, my church home, and a climate that is very palatable year round. The comforting peace of the Lord has helped me through the emotional – letting go of these precious moments in order to say;

“Yes, Lord, I’ll go…. Send Me!  I’m excited to meet  and greet my new friends and family!

The nostalgia of this moment reminds me of the words to the song Elvis would sing, “Memories pressed between the pages of my mind.”

Then I heard the voice of the Lord say to me,

“It’s enough.”

I questioned, “Your grace?”  He said,

“Yes, My Grace is enough but  Jesus’ sacrifice is enough to carry you on through the next season, rest in Me and in the provision, purpose and power that I will provide for you.”

I will put My laws upon their heart, And on their minds I will write them,” Hebrews 10:16b

HE HAS ALREADY PREPARED THE HEARTS AHEAD!

Jesus sacrifice contains the provision  and the grace for what I need for the journey ahead.

A few months ago I received two very confirming words:

1) I would be a mother to the nations, and
2) I would be fully satisfied finding the treasures God had planted in the people and the path ahead.  Isaiah 54:11b-12  says;

I’ve been asked several times from friends and family… What is a crisis and trauma care missionary and how will live?

What is a missionary?  mis·sion·ar·y ˈmiSHəˌnerē/

We are all called to “GO” – The Word Missionary is not a scriptural word, but is used to explain how the disciples and others followed Jesus’ command to “Go” and make disciples.  As a believer and disciple of Christ, we are all under the same mandate. The method of our “going” may look different, but whether it is here in America or a foreign field, the mandate to share the gospel, teach  God’s Word, and equip or mentor others is the same!

“The Lord Jesus did not express His commission as a desire or a wish or a premonition of what might happen in the future. He spoke it as a command. He ordered, “Go . . . make disciples . . . baptizing . . . teaching”. These words were not an option to be considered among other options by those to whom He spoke. He here was presenting His marching orders for His disciples which were to be obeyed, no matter what the result might be. And failure to obey these orders would rightly bring into question whether one truly was a follower of this Master.” David Merck: Pastor

Missionary – noun

a person sent on a religious mission, especially one sent to promote Christianity in a foreign country.

synonyms:  Evangelist, apostle, proselytizer, preacher

adjective

of, relating to, or characteristic of a missionary or a religious mission.

“missionary work”

So, my commission is to go where God says to go and do what He tells me to do.  This is a daily, hourly and even sometime minute by minute process. Crisis and trauma strikes when we least expect it, or even sometimes in the middle of great men and women of God who are working hard to follow God themselves.

It is important working in the midst of caring, to self-care.  Please pray that I will take my own advice! Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers!

What is Truth? Truth will set the Captives Free!

Truth is defined by one source as “sincerity in action, character, and utterance” [1]Perhaps the most famous verse about truth in the Bible is what Jesus said “… I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) So Jesus is truth and Jesus is also the Word (John 1:1, 14).  As Christians we believe that every word in the Bible is true; this is the foundation upon which we live our lives. Knowing what the Bible says about truth and hiding God’s word in our heart helps us to know when we are listening to the Voice of Truth. Here are twenty great scripture quotes about truth.

The Bible is the Word of Truth

Psalm 119:160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

Daniel 10:21 But I will tell you what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except Michael, your prince.

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

God Leads in Truth

Job 34:12 Of a truth, God will not do wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice.

Psalm 25:5 Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.

Psalm 43:3 Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling!

Psalm 86:11 Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.

James 1:18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Jesus Teaches Truth; Jesus Is Truth

Bible Verses About Truth

“Let us rejoice in truth, whenever we see its lamp burning.”

Matthew 22:16 And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances.

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 8:31-32 … So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 17:8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. (Jesus speaking)

Walking in and Speaking Truth

Psalm 15:1-2 O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart;

Zechariah 8:16 These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace;

Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 3:18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Christian Quotes About Truth

“Today not only in philosophy but in politics, government, and individual morality, our generation sees solutions in terms of synthesis and not absolutes. When this happens, truth, as people have always thought of truth, has died.”  ~ Francis Schaeffer

“I believe that in the end the truth will conquer.” ~ John Wycliffe

“Let us rejoice in the truth, wherever we find its lamp burning.” ~ Albert Schweitzer

“Never let us be guilty of sacrificing any portion of truth on the altar of peace.” ~ J. C. Ryle

“As a matter of honor, one man owes it to another to manifest the truth.” ~ Thomas Aquinas
