If You Clean Your Room ~ You Can Go To Europe

Colt in Europe
Derrick Colt – Trip to Europe

Presentation – Life Lesson # 4

“And which of you that is a father shall his son ask for a loaf of bread, and the father gives him a stone? or a fish, and he gives him a serpent?” Luke 11:11

Our heavenly father wants to reveal His nature as a good father. Maybe we didn’t have the best fathers, or husbands or even spiritual leaders. But, I know God wants to present good things to us.

I remember my son Colt when he was about to graduate his second year of college, wanted to go backpacking in Europe over the summer. My immediate thought was, “No, I can’t provide, I’m a single mom and I’ll be worried about him.”

“What if something happened and I couldn’t get him back home?”

So, in my insecurity as a single mom my response was to blame shift and I said, “How are you going to get to Europe, you can’t even keep your room cleaned? Have you prayed about this?” His response, “So if I clean my room can I go to Europe?” I was waiting for him to add, “Where God guides He provides!” But the sweet son that he is, he didn’t add that in there!

“Now that is a negotiator for you!” Colt should and could have been a hostage negotiator with the government.”

“What was I to say?”

So, like any good mother (thinking he would never do it), said, “Sure, If you clean your room and keep it cleaned you can go to Europe this summer providing you have the money.” Feeling very smug and safe that not only he wouldn’t keep his room cleaned, he didn’t have a job, so he would never be able to raise enough money in time.

So like any good mother who wanted her son to accomplish his dreams, I put a sign up on his bedroom door reminding him of his passion to go to Europe. It read,

IF YOU CLEAN YOUR ROOM YOU CAN GO TO EUROPE.

Now anyone that knows my son, Colt knows he is extremely brilliant, a very good negotiator and would have every detail of this trip planned out in his mind. But, he is also a procrastinator! He has a very dry but sense of humor that is simply amazing. Unlike his younger brother Maverick, you rarely see him belly laughing. He can tell the funniest joke with a straight face that makes it even funnier….

One afternoon I pull up to my house beside him and was overcome with laughter because of his laughter and inability to get out of his car. He was belly laughing so hard. It almost scared me because I thought he might be intoxicated or something of the same nature.

Instead, he gets out of his car and asked me, “Did you call my logic professor at school?” I stopped laughing and said, “No, I don’t even know who he is. Why?”

He then began to tell me probably the funniest but most awesome presentation my son ever had to do in college. Colt went on to say, “We had a pop quiz today, and everyone had to draw out a slip of paper and argue why or why not their statement was a logical statement. I looked and felt like an idiot when I had to argue why my statement was logical.” “Why was that?, I replied. My statement was, “If you clean your room, you can go to Europe.”

Honestly, I felt like I was in a dream. I knew at that moment God was speaking to my son.

“Colt, I would say this is a confirmation that God wants you to go to Europe.”

Luke 2:49 “And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Knew ye not that I must be in my Father’s house.”

I think this was the moment I realized my son was no longer a little child, a toddler, a teen but he had reached manhood. The words Jesus spoke to his mother and father when they turned back after realizing Jesus had stayed back in the temple teaching at the age of twelve flooded my soul. Later it was not only a test of Colt’s faith, but sorely mine, when I put my son on a plane to Europe with only $35 in his pocket. But God provided for him every step of that journey. I was a nervous wreck, but I knew God was preparing and presenting my son for his purpose and calling here on this earth.

Maybe you are a single mom, maybe it looks like you don’t have anything, and trusting others is difficult and there are days when you don’t know where, when or how you will survive, but I say this is a lie from the pit of hell. If you belong to Jesus, then you have resources at your fingertips. And even if you don’t know Jesus, you can still ask God for His help, and I believe He will help you.

My idea of what we are to “look like” as Christians has changed so dramatically over the years. Each one of my four biological sons and many spiritual sons and daughters are in different places, different cultures and different stages of their walks with our Heavenly Father. I have to believe God is allowing and planning things for them that will draw them closer to Him. As their mom, I believe my job now is just loving and praying for God’s best for each one of them!

It’s another life’s lesson on letting go and letting God do the work in them. I love my sons and I love what the Lord is doing in my life and in theirs.

Fathers, We Need You! You are Soul Care Providers

I was sitting in a coffee shop thinking about Father’s Day and asking God what He wanted me to share.  There have been many influential fathers in my lives. Pictured above and below are just a few of some of the ones I know personally.

While I was writing I was privy to a conversation of a young man talking about the soon coming birth of his son. He described it, like being in the midst of a hurricane that is soon approaching.”

He went on to basically describe, “His newfound fatherhood is like a flurry of preparing for an uncontrollable event that he knew would radically change his life forever.”

He added, “My baby boy is running around inside my wife’s belly kicking and screaming. He is coming… and he will be here soon!”

Then a few weeks ago this man’s unborn son went from kicking and lots of active movement in his mother’s womb to no activity and no respiratory score. Thankfully, after testing and waiting, they found out the baby is fine. I know this must have been especially scary, since this couple has been married for over 14 years and this is their first pregnancy.

He was talking with a couple about helping build non-profit sustainability programs  in Alaska. From their conversation I believe he will make a great dad and provider.

I love how the Lord will seat people right next to you who have the same heart and passion for souls and discipleship. I believe this confirms what God is calling us as believers to do in this hour.  I call these individuals Soul Care Providers.

Fatherhood

I’ve known many mothers and fathers who have gone through trials and tribulations regarding their children. Whatever the storm, God has it under control.

“Jesus is walking through the storm to get to your boat.” Cynthia Pettis

In 1993 I went to work for a young man and his wife who had waited over a decade for their first son. It was such a blessing when this little boy was born! This family now has three grown children and they have been such a model for other parents as well as an example of the Father’s love for His children.

This picture on the left is of Johnny Blue Craig Sr. and his son Johnny Blue Jr. This picture was  created for a prepaid phone card and a promotional ad for a Fatherhood Campaign. There is only a short window of time we have as parents and especially fathers to influence the next generation. The picture on the right is Johnny Blue, April and their three grown children.

We need fathers to come to the revelation that you become a father when life is conceived and you are a “father and soul care provider” even before your baby arrives.

Storms of life come suddenly and how can we prepare

Onward Christian soldiers
Marching as to war
With the cross of Jesus
Going on before
Onward then, ye people
Join our happy throng
Blend with ours your voices
In our triumph song
Christ the royal master
Leads against the foe
Forward into battle
See His banners go
Crowns and Thrones may perish
Kingdoms rise and wane
But the cross of Jesus
Constant will remain

Face of God

When I was in Asia recently and looking into the faces of my two grandson’s Jonah and Hudson, I encountered total unconditional love and unspeakable joy. I observed how they cling to their mother when they are tired and hungry, but aren’t afraid to explore and be themselves in the presence of their mom and dad. When they are alone with their daddy and they run, jump, and get a little more daring in their exploration and play adventures.

They haven’t learned about the dangers and pitfalls that are outside their walls of protection. Whenever they do experience bumps, bruises or sickness, they know their mom and dad will be quick to gather them and soothe their hurts.

As one who knows the loving face of God, my desire and prayer for them is that they will grow up and experience the joy of salvation, healing and unconditional love of God.

Amy Jonah Hudson Windo

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me
You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeahRead full Lyrics Reckless Love by Cory AsburyRead full Lyrics Reckless Love by Cory Asbury

Recently Pastor Dennis, of Northgate Alaska church was teaching on the Face of God and told a story about his granddaughter Heidi, He said, “One of Heidi’s first words was Agoo.” Even though no one exactly knew what this word meant, her joy and laughter was very endearing. She recognized that she was able to totally engage and capture the hearts of her loved ones during these face to face encounters, especially with her grandfather.

Every person is born with a “joy center” in their brain. These types of exchanges between each of us launches waves of joy and excitement and creates unforgettable memories. Face to face encounters provides a sense of love, safety and security that all children need, especially in the formative years. Both science and God’s Word tells us how important it is to stimulate and train the “joy centers” of our brains which can only come through face-to-face encounters.

During these face-to-face times of communication Jonah, Hudson, and Heidi knows they are the objects of complete panim and shalom.

The Matsu Valley in Alaska has been recorded as the worst place to grow up in Alaska, and perhaps the State of Alaska has one if not the highest rank as being one of the worst places in the United States to bring up a child.

Northgate Burn

Northgate Alaska is one of the churches in the Mat-Su Valley who has declared war on this statistic and  has made it part of their local and global mission to create a community that is actively constructing a face to face pathway to train up and raise their children to experience a face to face relationship with the living God. They have been meeting for 18 years for a time of worship, praise, prayer and intercession for their community, state, nation and world. The group called Northgate Burn meets face to face with God each week.

Peniel, panim, is Hebrew for face or faces of God.

Scripture tells us God and Adam and Eve would meet face to face. Adam and Eve had been walking in the garden God created for them to live and meet until one day Satan disguised as a serpent came and tempted them. Genesis 3

Sin (doubt and unbelief) entered into Adam and Eve and they felt ashamed of what they had done (their sinfulness) and they hid from God. Genesis 3:8 says,

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Genesis 3 8

I thought about Heidi and how innocent she was when she was communicating with her granddaddy, saying Agoo! At these times she is totally safe in these face to face encounters.

Imagine someone coming into her life, or your life and saying, “Don’t trust him, there are things that are better for you than this, and if you experience it (or just take this bite), your life will be so much better?”

Once our innocence and trust is broken, doubt, unbelief and a host of other sinful thoughts begin to turn our joy into ungodly thoughts and eventually desires. It is difficult many times for us, like it was for Adam and Eve to understand WHY?

God does allow us and those we know and love to experience hurt, brokenness, and the effects of sin. It seems like we are unprotected.  But, God’s unconditional love for us and for mankind is always available and never negates His desire to be with us face to face.

God loves us so much He sent his son to restore a never ending life with Him. When we accept and follow His plan of redemption we are empowered to overcome sin and death in all of it’s ugly forms.

colt and kiss (1)

God’s intentions are always to restore us to this face-to-face position with him. He banished Adam and Eve from the garden, but continued to provide for them.

Also for Adam and his wife the Lord God made tunics of skin, and clothed them.
Genesis 3:21

Vest

I don’t find it any coincidence in the story of Anna the Prophetess that her father’s name was Phanuel which means face of God.

Luke 2:35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your soul as well.” 36There was also a prophetess named Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, who was well along in years. She had been married for seven years, 37and then was a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.…

Anna worshiped day and night in the temple and waited, for the day she had been promised to see the Jehovah’s face. After recognizing the baby she became one of the first Christian evangelists.
She was also standing in it at that hour and she gave thanks to THE LORD JEHOVAH and was speaking about him with everyone who was waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem. Luke 2:38
Because of the fall of man, God was not going to give up on mankind. So in an instant faster than we can even imagine, He devised the plan of redemption through the second Adam, Yahushua. The Hebrew Bible uses Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ) for Joshua, which means “Yah is Salvation.” Christians, historians, and linguists outside the sacred name movement for the most part reject the term Yahshua (יהשע) in favor of Yeshua (ישוע) as the original pronunciation.

And every priest stands ministering daily and
offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
But this Man,
after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever,
sat down at the right hand of God,
from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool.
For by one offering
He has perfected forever those who are being [d]sanctified.

Hebrews 10:11-14

When we realize we have sinned and have been sinned against, we can regain our original position God gave Adam and Eve and all mankind through the plan of salvation and redemption God provided in and through Jesus.

hammock.JPG

Coming to Jesus as a little child puts us in the same position of innocence and complete humbleness that enables us to receive eternal life, and all of the benefits of becoming His child.

What God wants from us, is a face-to face encounter.  I hear the voice of God say,

“Stop struggling, It’s time for you to trust me, and let down the walls and those hidden places of sin that separate you and I from being totally “face to face”.”

DADDY, JESUS AND COFFEE

IMG_7191
Baggs Fruit & Produce 2017 Established 1955

Daddy, Jesus and Coffee – Happy Birthday Daddy!

Today May 5th – 2018

My dad would have been 96 today.  It seems like an eternity since I moved to help my younger brother Keith take care of him in 2006.

Baggs Fruit and Produce Market was his life. He and my mom established it July 4th weekend 1955 and it is still in operation. I once asked my dad if he ever minded going to work, (this was when he was 89)? He simply said, “I look forward to waking up every morning and having a place to go that is mine and that I love!” He truly loved the produce market and he loved to watch things grow. He could look at a baby sprout in the field with bad eyesight and tell you what the crop was. He was a great farmer, like his daddy ~12th generation.

It has been six years since his 90th birthday and his passing along. I still miss my daddy. I miss fixing him breakfast and listening to his comforting laugh and silly jokes and the way one eyebrow would raise when he was pulling my leg about something or telling a story that he knew was getting my undivided attention. This was how my daddy showed he cared, telling stories and getting the laughs. I loved the tall tales!  Now, my son Maverick and his son Jonah have this same trait.  The Lord is so good! Below is a story about a day with my dad. I call it Daddy, Jesus and Coffee.

This is a Repost from May 20, 2012

This morning (May 20, 2012) my daddy went to his heavenly home.
He is finally at peace, running, jumping and probably drinking coffee with Jesus! The last few years have been quite a struggle for him. He didn’t like being bedridden and he was tired of being sick and tired. The last time I prayed with him, he said he felt like a “zombie.”  My dad could describe his feelings in one word or one sentence matter of fact statements.  Usually the humor expressed subtly would hit you a few hours later, giving you a fresh appreciation of his wisdom. My daddy was one of the hardest workers I’ve ever known.  Over the past three years, he had gone from getting up early, going to work seven days a week 364 days a year (he always took off Christmas), to being barely able to get out of bed.

Only after extreme doses of chemo therapy and radiation, at the ripe old age of 87, he lost his strength. His mind remained “sharp as a tack” and like I said earlier, he always had a quick wit about him…even to the very end of his life here on earth.

One of his favorite sayings was, “I don’t care which way the wind blows as long as I get a little breeze.” His last birthday was May 6th and he was 90 years old, now he is in eternity. The Lord wants us to honor our parents so we can live a long life.  He honored his daddy who lived to be 96!

I was blessed to have had my daddy and the stories he shared with me over the years. I will miss him. Below is a story I wrote a few years ago, called The Coffee Cup.

96ca7-the2bcoffee2bcup

The Coffee Cup
Dear Seed Sower Deb,

You asked about my dad. This morning I’m home with him. His heart is getting weaker and weaker but he is still able to crack a joke. I always make coffee when he stays home and this morning I took him another cup. Usually I take him a small delicate cup, but this one was heavier. He needs the exercise!

Of course he lays down and drinks his coffee because he is weak. I poured him a refill and he said, “This is the height of laziness.” (He meant, laying in bed drinking coffee.)

He keeps asking me if his brain is ok? He’s worried about becoming demented. I assure him he’s still all there. This has been a serious learning experience being at home with my dad who is 87. I’ve learned a lot and I’ve been blessed to be loved alot.

He is always thankful for every little thing and rarely complains. One thing I’ve noticed is that he is able to discern whenever he is anxious about something. He knows and understands whether or not something is a matter that you should get upset about.

He says, “my nerves are bad, I get upset over something I shouldn’t get upset over.”

This reminded me of Phil 4:6 “Be careful (anxious)for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

For those of you out there with older parents…appreciate their wisdom….and love their life….that all may go well with you and you will live a long life. For more about his produce market he started in 1955 check out
