Roman Roads & Returning Soldiers

The greatest pandemic in the world is the one of lost souls… We must continue to share the hope that is within us to a lost and dying world…

Trouble and persecution did not stop Christians from sharing the gospel.

The very roads the Romans built to conquer the world were the very ones in which the returning soldiers from Seleucia (in modern day Iraq) brought back the plague that killed an estimated 2,000 Romans per day.

The Antonine Plague was named for Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, who ruled during the outbreak along with co-regent Lucius Verus, the outbreak began in 165 and lasted until 180. An estimated five million people died from what is now thought to have been smallpox. It’s believed to have begun in the Mesopotamian city of Seleucia (in modern-day Iraq) and spread to Rome by soldiers returning from the city’s siege. At one point during the extended pandemic an estimated 2,000 Romans died each day. This isn’t a plague that discriminated—both emperors mentioned above are believed to be among its victims.

Written a century earlier,

Romans 1 says in The Message Bible, I, Paul, am a devoted slave of Jesus Christ on assignment, authorized as an apostle to proclaim God’s words and acts. I write this letter to all the believers in Rome, God’s friends.

I thank God through Jesus for every one of you. That’s first. People everywhere keep telling me about your lives of faith, and every time I hear them, I thank him. And God, whom I so love to worship and serve by spreading the good news of his Son—the Message!—knows that every time I think of you in my prayers, which is practically all the time, I ask him to clear the way for me to come and see you. The longer this waiting goes on, the deeper the ache. I so want to be there to deliver God’s gift in person and watch you grow stronger right before my eyes! But don’t think I’m not expecting to get something out of this, too! You have as much to give me as I do to you. Romans 1:8-12 MSG

Paul did not allow hardship, difficult circumstances and fear to stop him from serving the Lord. As we work through this time, let us remember to be courageous, kind to one another, and may the Lord continue to help us share His love with others each and every day, at every opportunity.
