40 Days versus 40 Years – Fighting an unseen enemy…Corona Virus

“For forty years – one year for each of the forty days you explored the land – you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.”

Numbers 14:34

Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.'” Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

Mark 14:57-59

As I listened to the WHO today as they discussed what we can learn from the Ebola outbreak, the Aids Virus, the SARS outbreak and now the Corona virus, Dr. Michael Ryan says, “If you need to be right before you move, then you will never be right.” The greatest error is to be paralyzed by the fear of failure.

I hear and see many who are being moved and motivated by the words of imperfect men. They are fearful God will fail. I ask you, “Can God fail?”

April 8, 1966 The Time’s Magazine cover story, “Is God Dead?” was the only Time Cover ever printed without a photograph.

As William Grimes of The New York Times recounts,

The issue caused an uproar, equaled only by John Lennon’s offhand remark, published in a magazine for teenagers a few months later, that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.  The “Is God Dead?” issue gave TIME its biggest newsstand sales in more than 20 years and elicited 3,500 letters to the editor, the most in history to that point. It remains a signpost of the 1960s, testimony to the wrenching social changes transforming the United States.

It is over 50 years later, and it is important to remember that God is not dead, the Beatles were not more popular than Jesus and without a doubt God’s perfect love still casts out all fear.

Let our actions be those that are motivated by God and not by man.

The beginning of wisdom is to fear God.

When the Israelites approached the promised land they sent out spies to go and check it out. Joshua and Caleb reported back after they had explored the land for forty days and nights, “With God, we can take this land.” They said, “the land is good, flowing with milk, honey and good things just like God promised.”

The other spies, however were fearful and this incited civil unrest. In essence they were saying, “God is dead and God can fail.”

The people panicked and blamed the LORD for bringing them out of Egypt and into the desert. They wanted to stone the leaders and Moses as well. They blamed God, but didn’t believe in Him to help them conquer the land.

Moses, Aaron, Joshua and Caleb fell down in front of the assembly and tore their clothes, and repented before the Lord on behalf of the people. Their faith was in the Lord and they begged the people to not turn their trust away from the Lord. The people developed a mob mentality and became self centered rather than God centered. They quickly turned against God and refused to believe in His power, provision and protection over them.

Moses prayed to God on behalf of the people.

“Now may the Lord’s strength be displayed, just as you have declared: The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.’ In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.”

Numbers 14:17-19

The story is clear. Instead of Forty days, (one month and ten days) they spent the next forty years wandering and waiting for the generation of unbelievers to die off so the next generation could enter the promised land. In spite of Moses and the leaders intercession, God did not allow the unfaithful to enter into the land He had prepared for them.

We are under attack by an unseen enemy, but the Lord wants us to remember His words, His promises and that He is not dead and He still can not fail.

Ephesians Chapter Six begins with a word to be obedient to God and also to those who are in authority over us. The apostle Paul also advises us to be in constant prayer. God has not died, He is not afraid, and He can not fail. He has many things prepared for those that love Him, and serve Him.

We are currently in a season of lent. Lent, in Christianity, a period of penitential preparation for Easter, beginning on Ash Wednesday in Western churches. Lent is observed for 40 days in imitation of Jesus Christ’s fast in the wilderness, and focuses on fasting, prayer, and alms giving.

As we also prepare to remember the crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, let us remember that Emanuel, our God is always with us. His love, provision and protection is available to us. Do not turn away from God, but draw close to Him. It is important to teach our children, and grandchildren the importance of standing firm in our love and faith in Jesus Christ, our Savior. He will help us to be strong. He will not fail.

Christ lists the signs of the Beginning of the End.

For nation [ethnos] shall rise against nation, and kingdom [basileia] against kingdom: and there shall be famines [limos], and pestilences [loimos], and earthquakes [seismos], in divers places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Matthew 24:7-8

The apostle Paul writing from prison reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians that when we are faced with trials, that our weapons of prayer are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

As we seek the Lord, let us remember to Walk Together in His Spirit and to not grow fearful or weary in praying for others. Paul asks for prayer to declare the word fearlessly, not once but twice. Let us also proclaim the gospel without fear around the world and through our testimony, again without fear. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.
