One of the things that never ceases to amaze me is the resiliency of the Alaskan people and their ability to live off the land. What they do to protect themselves from God’s extreme weather in Alaska is truly amazing!
Above are other Alaskan artifacts Dorothy Page Museum located in Wasilla, Alaska in the Mat-Su valley. Hatcher’s Pass and the Independance Mine are also located in the valley. Seal furs, skins and even the guts (intestines) were used to make and provide clothing which would keep out the icy rain, snow and provide warmth in the very sub zero temperatures.
During my visit at the museum I was able to meet with Bethany Follett, the museum’s curator. She and I talked about several of the displays and the people who pioneered and settled this area as well as the native community. There are so many different cultures, nations and pioneering men and women who have built the community of Wasilla and the surrounding Mat-Su Valley.
Because of Alaska’s unique and extreme climate, it is important to maintain the principle of working long hours in the summer to prepare for the long and hard winters. One of those pioneer women is Northgate Church Discipleship Leader, Amberly Brejah. She and her husband built a play slide, inside their home, from their top to the bottom floor. This allows their children to play and get exercise during the long and harsh Alaskan winters. I thought this was amazing and so did Bethany! It is important for children to be able to laugh and play, especially in the Mat-Su Valley which has been designated as one of mostdifficult places in Alaska to raise a child.
Every Thursday evening, Northgate opens their church doors and has a worship, praise and prayer meeting. It is a sweet time of worship, intercessory prayer and declaring God’s Word over the Mat-Su Valley, State, nation and the world. Watch YouTube Video.
I believe God is helping men and women create “witty inventions” in this hour to reverse these statistics! With Generation Z being labled as the “loneliest generation” it is important to share the good news radically!
I remember when my sons were growing up their baseball coach put in a pitching and batting cage in our backyard. In Tallahassee, Florida they were able to use this wonderful addition to our home year round just like Amberly’s children in the Mat-Su Valley!
