“Recently I felt the Lord say, Marlene, 2018 will be a year of acceleration, fruitfulness and you will catch a second wind if you don’t give up!”

This was confirmed recently by a prophetic word from Gale Sheehan : 2018 Open Doors in the Eye of the Storm,

Just like the “eyewall” represents the strongest wind, many times the last step to victory may seem the hardest. Just like a long-distance runner needs to break through the “wall” to receive a “second wind” to finish a race, we will need a spiritual “second wind” in our spiritual races to finish. The “second wind” brings a time of refreshing and renewal. 2018 is a year appointed for the “second wind” from the Lord. Gayle Sheehan – Read Full Article

In 1972 there was a famous collegiate runner who won the 1972 Olympic gold medal in Munich Germany for the 800 meter race. His finish time was 1:44.3.  He was also well known for two other things;

1) He would run wearing a tattered old golf hat to hold back his long hair and;
2) His sudden burst of energy, speed and second wind ~ known as the:
Dave Wottle Kick!

It is this Dave Wottle Kick or second wind which overrides a person’s desire to give out and into defeat or exhaustion. Striding for and finding this invigorating and refreshing second breath or kick of wind enables runners and athletes to go the extra mile, two or more.

It is not only athletes who need or may find this second wind. There are those whom often find themselves in the middle of emergencies, trauma, crisis or even “normal life today.”  I know I often need the mind set of Dave Wottle telling myself,

I’m not going to give in or up till I’ve crossed the line!”

Dave Wottle was a determined 22 year old in spite of opposition. Wottle married just six days after the Olympic trials started.  Being a newlywed worried his coach. Wottle (still married 40 years later spoke about his coach in a 2012 interview:

“He was old-school, and I’m trying to think how to put this tactfully,” Wottle said, “but he thought women weaken legs.”

He also  injured his knee in training just before these games. Dave had two very good reasons to “give in or up,” but  as I see it, he did just the opposite, he pressed in harder.

The writer in Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us as Christians not to give up or in when we feel like it, but to press onward,

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

When we are running our race for the Lord; when the net of sin trys to surround us, let’s fix our eyes on Jesus, accelerate our pace toward the track, the Lord has already paved before us, trusting that He will give us the wind of the Holy Spirit and the “Dave Wottle Kick” to finish our race!
